Why Biodiversity Matters: Protecting SA Land Benefits Us All

As we recently celebrated Biodiversity Month in Australia, it’s the perfect time to highlight why biodiversity matters, especially locally in SA.

Biodiversity is the variety of all life on Earth, and is made up of different plants, animals, microorganisms and the ecosystems they form. Protecting our planet’s biodiversity isn’t just about saving our plants and animals, it’s about protecting the systems that keep us healthy too. From fertile soils to clean water biodiversity is the foundation of our food security and wellbeing.

Protecting biodiversity also plays a huge role in our mental health. The more time we spend out in nature, whether it’s a bushwalk or just sitting under a tree, it can help reduce stress, improve our mood and connect us to something bigger than ourselves.

In South Australia, Landcare SA supports local groups working to protect and restore biodiversity. From habitat restoration to planting native species, Landcare SA and their members are making a huge difference in SA’s biodiversity.

How can you help? You can get started right where you live. Plant native trees and shrubs to provide food and shelter for local wildlife. Reduce or avoid chemicals in your garden to keep pollinators safe. Joining a local Landcare Group or joining a planting day, are other ways you can get involved to create real impact.

Biodiversity matters in so many ways, and by taking small steps in your own backyard or neighbourhood you can help protect the natural world that protects us all.
